Facts about Vitamin D
Did you know that Vitamin D is the only vitamin made by the human body? In fact, Vitamin D is made as a direct result of exposure to sunlight as well as UV light. Vitamin D is important for the release of hormones which causes a stabilizing effect to the body and body moods. Although artificial UV tanning can have a negative effect on the body in excess, it does allow people to feel like they are getting natures rays because Vitamin D is being produced which in turn effects mood and disposition. For all of those who do choose artificial tanning and seem "mood dependent" on it, there is a direct relationship between UV exposure, Vitamin D creation, and thus a greater feeling of contentment and satisfaction than in those subjects with no exposure to any sunlight, artificial or otherwise.
Vitamin "D" combats depression, which can be linked to Seasonal Activated Disorder(SAD). People tend to experience this during the colder months as their outdoor involvement, and corresponding exposure to the sun is less. This can be very easily avoided by taking a half hour car ride, as sunlight through windows, provided there is not complete UV blocking, is still an acceptable means by which to "catch some healthy rays". Even sitting out in a glass enclosure with a heater is a good way to start the process of Vitamin "D" production. So the moral of the story is, getting outside in the winter wasn't just something that sounded like good advice, or a way for Mom to get us out of her hair for a little bit when we were growing up!
Since vitamin D is naturally produced by the body, you only want to turn to supplements as a last resort if there is a problem with your Vitamin D production mechanism. Otherwise, overuse of supplementation can and does leads to toxic levels in the system over time. In order to find out if there is a problem with your ability to produce Vitamin D, you have to first put your body in the best state it can be in to produce it. That being said, we want to make sure that we have adequate exposure to sunlight, more activity levels, proper rest, nutrition, and a little bit of fresh air! This can and will do wonders to assist you in the quest for a happier, healthier you! Should you need further advice on Vitamin D or feel that you may be at risk for defficiency, please do not hesitate to contact us for additional information or consult with your family doctor.
